A space that breathes. MORA!
Nestled in the coastal city of Visakhapatnam, MORA, a sustainable G+1 residence with a terrace is a heartfelt response to the client’s vision of a home that respects nature, embraces tradition, and prioritises well-being. The design seamlessly blends passive strategies with traditional Indian elements, creating a space that breathes with the environment while offering contemporary comforts.
Jack arch slab system
The design reduces material usage with a jack arch slab system, which requires less concrete than conventional slabs without compromising structural integrity. An internal courtyard, complemented by a stone jaali screen, introduces a natural cooling mechanism; channeling breezes and filtering the air before it flows through the house. This careful orchestration of airflow adds a layer of passive cooling, reducing energy demands.

Laterite stone for the walls
To stay rooted in local context, the home is constructed using laterite stone for the walls; a material known for its excellent thermal insulation properties. This choice not only reduces the carbon footprint but also helps maintain comfortable indoor temperatures, minimising the need for artificial cooling. The interior walls will be finished with lime plaster, a natural, breathable material that’s been used in Indian homes for centuries, while the exterior walls proudly showcase the rugged beauty of exposed laterite stone.
Water is treated as a precious resource in this home. Rainwater from the terrace cascades down decorative water chains into a small entrance pond, creating a serene water feature. The excess water is then directed to a rainwater harvesting pit, promoting self-sufficiency and water conservation. Meanwhile, the terrace is envisioned as a thriving garden, adding greenery to the home and contributing to thermal comfort.

The ground floor opens with a traditional Indian verandah that serves as a welcoming foyer, blurring the lines between indoors and outdoors. On the first floor, a spacious lounge with vertical wooden louvers invites gentle northern sunlight, creating a tranquil atmosphere for yoga and meditation. These design choices foster a deep connection to nature and encourage moments of reflection and mindfulness.

Carefully aligned with Vastu
Every aspect of the home is carefully aligned with Vastu principles, honouring the client’s spiritual and cultural requirements. A designated area for solar panels on the terrace ensures the home can embrace renewable energy in the future, making the design adaptable and future-proof.
This project is a testament to the power of sustainable architecture. Therefore, proving that homes can be both rooted in tradition and forward-thinking in their approach to the environment. It’s a living, breathing space where design and nature coexist, creating a sanctuary that will evolve and thrive for generations to come.
